A Steinway artist, Chinese pianist Xiaohan Wang is increasingly becoming a leading figure in the classical music world in his native country as well as abroad. He is Artistic Director in the Arthur Rubinstein International Youth Piano Competition and the Singapore International Piano Competition, and has recently been appointed Head of Piano at the Tianjin Juilliard School Pre-College and professor of chamber music for the post-graduate.
As a soloist, Wang has performed hundreds of concerts at many acclaimed international music halls, namely the German Bavarian Broadcasting Symphony Hall, Russian Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and Israel Tel Aviv Mann Auditorium. His performances has taken him to Germany, France, UK, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, USA, Canada, Israel, Japan and South Korea. He was also guest performer at several international music festivals such as Ravinia, USA; Beethoven Festival, Germany; Arthur Rubinstein Festival, Israel; the Hundred Pianists in the 20th Century Concert Series in Tokyo, Japan and the Concert for the 22nd Anniversary of Sino-ROK Diplomatic Relation in Seoul, South Korea. As a talented chamber musician, Wang has collaborated and performed with cellist Misha Maisky, the Jerusalem Quartet and the Takács Quartet.
Wang is a versatile artist as pianist, conductor and composer, with impressive success. As a conductor, he has conducted several renowned orchestras including the Israel Symphony. Also talented as a composer, his composition, A Lost Diary, won second prize in 2007 at the Chinese Piano Composition Competition. In 2008, his violin composition Scene of the Chinese Village was awarded third prize at the Chinese Violin Composition Competition, which was subsequently performed and recorded by distinguished Chinese violinist, Ning Feng. Furthermore, his piano piece The Inspiration of Painting was elected as the compulsory piece for the 2007 Beethoven International Piano Competition in Bonn.
Presently a piano professor at the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, he is frequently invited to give master classes and lectures at notable institutions at home and abroad, including the Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, Hannover Hochschule für Musik und Theater and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has also been on the jury in various music competitions. A dedicated pedagogue, Wang is devoted to cultivating brilliant young pianists. His students have achieved considerable success, winning many awards in national and international competitions.
Wang began his musical education at the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music Middle School, where he studied with Jin Aiping, Li Qifang and Zhou Guangren. He later furthered his studies at the Hannover Hochschule für Musik und Theater with Arie Vardi and Matti Raekallio. In 2010, he received his PhD degree with a perfect score in academic performance, the first in the university’s history. Wang has won prizes in several prestigious piano competitions in Europe and in USA, namely the ARD International Music Competition, Munich; the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, USA; and the Beethoven International Piano Competition in Bonn.
Wang’s music has been recorded in several CDs. His performance with the Köln Chamber Orchestra on Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 2, conducted by Helmut Müller-Brühl, was published by Naxos. His latest 2015 album, a live performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, was published by the Austrian Recording Company Bravo Artists. In addition, he was the cover star of the French journal Chopin.
